Personalize the “concert” experience.

first, an explanation of the technology, even though CD quality sound is still the widely accepted standard, other codecs like .FLAC, in the right hands have made the concert obselete for us grown little boys. to start, an explanation of the technology via microsoft copilot… if you’re basically a prisoner in your own home with boss tech, this might be a new niche for you. what was that, october 7th? you watching the news right now? i assure this beats an open dome arena with horrible acoustics and an egomaniac murderer burning through his family line.

A DAC is a digital‑to‑analog converter — the component that turns the 1s and 0s in your music files into the smooth electrical signal your headphones or speakers can actually play. Without a DAC, digital audio would be silent because our ears can only hear analog sound waves.

🎧 What a DAC Actually Does

  • Digital audio (MP3, FLAC, WAV, streaming, etc.) is stored as numbers.
  • A DAC reads those numbers and outputs a matching voltage that forms a continuous analog waveform.
  • Your headphones/speakers then turn that waveform into sound.

🔍 Why Every Device Already Has One
Phones, laptops, tablets, game consoles, smart speakers — they all contain built‑in DAC chips.
But these internal DACs are usually:

Not designed for high‑fidelity listening
That’s why audiophiles (like you, ummi) often upgrade to an external DAC for cleaner, more detailed sound.

Small

Low‑power

when i see new affordable tech i am a total and complete fool… i cannot lie. even though i purchase pretty much all my music things i like about the new generation of specialized audio players with improved dacs are…

  • the nuances i hear in my tunes even with my favorite pair of cheap cans the sony MDR-ZX310AP ZX.
  • the freedom to relax and listen to my music regardless of volume without bothering my family.
  • the diversity in design and compatibility with the new broad range of hi fidelity musical codecs now available.

i refuse to delude myself with labels such as “creator” or “audiophile” or “writer.” check the pseudonym. but if you are a true audiophile or a savant who can actually discern the difference between the tonal signatures of various musical notes you’ve probably already been here and mostly come away slightly disappointed no matter what the cost of budget digital audio player because you can go straight whale and purchase players retailing in the thousands. if your craft is lucrative for you, one of those might justify your disposal income if there was actually a perceivable difference. actually, a confession. i thought that the dac was a new innovation in audio technology but it’s not. but anyway, like i was trying to say (my mind tends to wander sometimes,) since the beginning of the era of digital audio sound was first conveyed through downloads and wi-fi using binary code devices that relied on that digital signal to play music have used dacs to translate those signals from ones and zeros to music. they are just way better now in my simple opinion. i will post the dap that i am maining right now in the title of this entry. trust me, i understand that with the advent of cellular phones that play music this seems unnecessary but how about you have a personal listening session in your own world with one of your favorite artists and a device which is expressly engineered to play music. i’m on the low end and when i’m not playing diablo iv, which you need to pre-purchase so you can get all the amenities that come with the ultimate edition… i’m good, not exactly happy, but good. first time ever spending 90$ on a video game and i ain’t mad, even with no friends for co-op and when it drops on the 28th of april that’s probably going to be a thing if it isn’t already. however, if i just implied it, lemme tell you… the pre-order is live. i repeat, the pre-order is live, and with the deluxe and ultimate editions, you get the paladin and the spiritborn. however, back off tangent, being an amazon associate, i have to shill you every time trying to get down, it doesn’t cost you any extra and this is not the premium version of this collection of devices full transparency, however, if you want to take that step up to the F28, and have been around p.c.’s for the majority of your life… Lord does that thing pair with some sennheiser 599’s, which i got on black friday for 99$. check that off the bucket list. but i can’t recommend it unless you get off on fighting with your hardware. i still own and love mine, but it’s deliberately obtuse… ebb and flow ya know, surfans is basically a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. the F20, while requiring a little knowledge of how these devices work, and having no hand holding software to download your tunes, is still a good value for the money. again the product designation is the surfans F20 and surfans has just released a “pro” version for an extra 10 bucks with streaming capabilities and android. here it is, if those two micro dacs have gotten your attention and you want something intuitive, that’s probably your best choice.

the refresh
the original

i figured out how to use my F28 so your not going to seduce me with that exact same two dac design you have enough of my cash. the original is about as intuitive as the simplest of those drag and drop devices that you use to steal video games. it looks like a tiny, modern, original ipod, as you can see, with a tactile, mechanically spinning selection wheel for a touch of steampunk, as does the pro pictured above. the original is barebones, no OS, communicates with your p.c. via usb c to usb a and supports the creation of individual, labeled file folders for easy navigation. if you’ve ever been a temp, you can do this. like i said, no streaming, no apps, strictly tunes. it supports the addition of album art with your favorite audio media management software, i recommend music bee. so that’s about it, i’ll post the amazon link here. i’m not going to speak to the feature set or quality of the refresh because i don’t have it and, since i figured out the F28 have no reason to buy it. but this is probably their attempt to broaden the audience that was farklempt by the F28… you’ve been warned. however, the original F20, best digital audio you can buy for under 130$. now…. i’m not a musician, but with this… supersize your order with the sony MDR-ZX310AP ZX. for most of you, if you’re getting a check in this madness… that’s all you need to facilitate your personal alone time. like i said in an entry a ways back this is that trinity of audio ectasy.

  • quality digital audio player.
  • quality headphones that complement the features of the player, they don’t necessarily have to be expensive, just feed the model designation of your player into one of these ai digital genies and it’ll spit out a few recommendations for you.
  • clean, hi fidelity media.

if you do purchase this player, through my link or no, i hope you develop the affinity for yours that i have for mine.
