‘however, for the pillar boxing on the pixel mode, and the slight distortion on the stretching, you were playing this thing in 640×480 on a 16:9 screen and loving it. now completely smooth visuals, and extra 16:9 display modes thanks be to the Lord. now the story of cave story. cave story started supposedly started as a five-year, one man, hobby project by japanese developer daisuke “pixel” amaya. people were receptive and the genuine vibe of the project was good and mr. amaya, being a proper capitalist with a lack of resources initially released the ip as freeware for microsoft windows on december 20, 2004, further; “cave story was self-published by amaya’s studio, studio pixel. its simple yet polished controls, charming art style, and deep gameplay quickly attracted a cult following online, earning near-universal critical acclaim for its design and influence on the indie gaming scene.” as quoted from wikipedia. like i say too frequently these days, to make a long story short, for what it is… this game has made an independent cameo on every platform that would have it from the original p.c. version who somebody actually modded to run in 21:9, that coding still working with the freeware version if you know how to set it up correctly… to my favorite with vastly improved graphics on the first switch and, yes… i mean it goes without saying but yes, i also own that one. now [moddersdelight] is adding little touches like that water that actually looks like water, and a presentation that actually fills up the screen without copping out about the dynamics of pixel sprites. fans were receptive to the old school sprite-based presentation of the game and its modest price tag, the nx version even being available for free on the net if you knew how to get it to function on your p.c. and again, with community introduced 21:9 monitor support. this thing has been given away and sold and resold with its epic, cute, cryptic story on everything from the p.c. to the nintendo 3DS with an actual polygon based graphical style that wasn’t exactly a hit with the critics, to a modernized sprite based version that has to be experienced if your old crotchety back isn’t too jacked up to enjoy playing it on the side of your bed. here’s where those obsessives of us who were granted intellectual gifts from the Lord come in. if what they’ve done to my game, because the main concern with cave story+ was that it really didn’t offer many advantages over the original free port and had a static 4:3 display mode with crispy square pixels that only fill up the middle of the screen and semi-lame remixes of the game music plus the option to configure the game to fill up the entire screen with that “vaseline graphic stretch” look that usually comes with stretching sprites and we just lamented the fact like we do so many times in our limits but not this time, not with these people. rejoice in your choice to be a p.c. gamer, because the cave story modding community has manipulated the p.c. plus version to a honed point where it deserves that designation. if you have a true hd monitor, even though i know most of you have moved on from those for more expensive pastures, it fills the screen at 16:9 without excessive unsightly stretching and even if you are a purist, the “sharp” pixel for pixel mode only introduces a small bezel around the edges of the screen. i prefer the “crt” scanline mode myself because it’s like the best of both worlds. and now the avatars mouths move like the penultimate switch version, this is incredible provided you love retro. i just made that complaint yesterday. this is the second late christmas gift that i have received from these assorted special people and i feel blessed to be the recipient regardless of what else is going on in the world, not my life because there are definitely more important things i could be doing with it. it’s in beta right now, just check the cave story+ update page or the web and all the information you need to properly set it up should be there for you. if you don’t have anything to play but are interested in indie games that do their best job to attempt to take you back to your pop tart, sunny delight chugging youth or want to jump in on something, again, we’ve literally waited decades for and it came to the point where the bright members of the community just got fed up and handled it. most likely reverse engineered from the switch version so i also suspect the participation of the sith lords at steam. the thing is 15 stinkies on steam and worth every dollar. something tells me that halloween and christmas for this thing are going to be extra special this year. the nintendo store digital switch version is 30$ and that is regarded by most fans, at least by me, as the absolute best version so get both.
thanks, truly,
the ummi
